I have to admit, as a person living in recovery from addiction it is challenging to live in a consumption driven society. The theme in America is “more” and “never enough”. -Buy 1 get the 2nd half off, “supersize” me, buy 3 get the 4th one free. The problem is the more we seek pleasure in things that temporarily fill us, the more dissatisfied we become. Addiction and consumerism are not that different when you consider the hedonic adaptation that occurs in both cases. Maybe the epidemic of addiction, anxiety and depression are a collective cry to course-correct? Maybe we are starting to awaken to this dis-eased way of thinking, an illusion of scarcity and lacking. Perhaps true joy and abundance exists in us and our connections to others and God
